The Difference between Botox and Injectable Fillers

Last updated 7 years ago

Whoever said that wrinkles were a sign of wisdom probably didn’t have either one. Are you trying to decide between cosmetic surgery and non-invasive treatment options for your wrinkles? Before you schedule a consultation with your skin rejuvenation spa, consider the difference between Botox and injectable fillers.

What is Botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin, is an FDA approved non-surgical treatment option used to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox works by paralyzing the muscles and nerve impulses that cause facial wrinkles and creases.

Benefits: Botox not only works to eliminate frown lines, forehead creases, crows’ feet, and excessive neck bands, but can also help to eliminate the formation of “dynamic” or new wrinkles. Many studies show that Botox also works to relieve migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and muscle spasms of the eyes and neck.

Injectable Fillers

Rather than using a mild toxin to paralyze your facial muscles, injectable fillers use chemical compounds to plump thin lips, enhance shallow facial contours, and soften facial creases. There are a variety of injectable fillers that your skin rejuvenation spa may utilize, including:

  • Hyaluronic Acid: Using a naturally occurring substance in your body, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers work to fill nasolabial folds and concave scars for approximately 6 months. Common examples of hyaluronic acid fillers include Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, and Prevelle Silk.
  • Hydroxylapatite: The heaviest of facial fillers, this injectable filler combines mineral compounds found in human bones with a gel-like formula to fill deeper creases, marionette lines, and enhance the fullness of cheek contours. The most commonly used hydroxylapatite filler is Radiesse.
  • PMMA: Polymethylmethacrylate fillers contain 20% PMMA microspheres and 80% purified collagen gel to correct facial wrinkles for up to one year.

While both Botox and injectable fillers combat fine lines and wrinkles, only injectable fillers work to plump sagging skin and fill hallow contours.
